Washington DC newborn photographer for relaxed, in-home sessions

Relaxed, natural newborn photos in the comfort of your home…

because you’re gonna wanna remember the feeling of becoming a family

Hi! I’m Mel Worthington, a Washington DC newborn photographer specializing in relaxed, in-home sessions for growing families.

I photograph the connection between you and your baby — the way life really looks in those first weeks together. No props, no special clothing and no need for a magazine-worthy home.

The early days with a newborn are a blur. You’re learning your baby and adjusting to a new rhythm. Somehow, the days pass faster than you expect.

Slow down and just take it all in…

I was reluctant to have newborn photos taken but am very glad we did!

In addition to having a beautiful eye for light, detail and capturing unvarnished moments, Mel is a delight to work with… We couldn’t have asked for a better experience or product!”

Things that don’t need to be perfect to capture beautiful family memories

1. Your home: This is where your family really lives, and that’s what makes it meaningful. We can move things around or tuck clutter into a closet if needed — no judgment here.

2. The weather:  Rain or shine, beautiful window light is all we need.

3. Your outfits:  You don’t need formal styling or special outfits. Simple, comfortable clothing that makes you feel good photographs best.

This is real family life – not a magazine shoot.

FAQ

Lifestyle newborn photography focuses on natural moments between parents and their baby rather than carefully posed studio images.

These sessions usually take place in your home, where your family is already settling in with your new baby. Instead of props or complicated posing, we document real interactions — holding your baby, feeding them, rocking them, and simply being together.

Posed newborn photography is typically done in a studio using props and carefully arranged positions while the baby sleeps. Lifestyle sessions take a different approach, focusing on connection and the real rhythm of life with a new baby.

Many newborn photos are taken within the first two weeks after birth, when babies are still very small and sleepy.

However, lifestyle newborn sessions are much more flexible because the focus is on connection rather than posed newborn positions.

Many families reach out after their baby arrives once they’ve had time to settle in. Some parents also appreciate waiting until they feel more like themselves after birth or have had time to recover.

Beautiful photographs can be created anytime during the first weeks of your baby’s life — holding your baby, feeding them, and simply being together at home.

Your baby does not need to sleep through their newborn session.

Awake moments, stretching, feeding and being held are all part of the story and are welcome!

Toddlers often have big feelings when a new baby arrives, and that’s completely normal.

Lifestyle newborn sessions give us time to include them naturally. Toddlers can help, take breaks, explore the room, or join in when they’re ready.

They don’t have to smile, say cheese, or hold still. They get to show up exactly as they are.

Comfortable clothing photographs best. There’s no need for color coordination or special outfits — just wear what feels like you right now.

Dress older siblings in their favorite clothes, even if it’s a princess dress or a superhero outfit. The goal is to capture real life so that your memories come flooding back when you look at these photos years from now.

Your home does not need to be perfect.

We usually photograph in one or two rooms and small adjustments are all it takes to make a space work beautifully.

It doesn’t take much natural light to make a beautiful photo, every home can work.

Your home isn’t the subject, just a cozy and familiar container for meaningful moments. Real life is welcome here.

Most newborn sessions last about one to two hours.

This allows time for feeding, soothing, and breaks while keeping the experience relaxed for both parents and baby.

Yes. Along with photographs of your family together, I will also capture simple images that focus just on your baby — their face, tiny hands and feet, and the small details that change so quickly.

In lifestyle newborn sessions, babies are photographed where they’re happiest: in your arms. Being held naturally provides a sense of scale, allowing those tiny features to stand out while still showing the connection between you.

The goal is to document both your baby and the relationships forming around them.

I photograph newborn sessions throughout Washington DC and nearby neighborhoods in the DMV area.

Many families choose in-home sessions so they can stay comfortable with their new baby.

Yes. Photographs are meant to live outside of screens.

I offer carefully designed albums and printed artwork so these early moments can become part of your family’s everyday life — on your walls, in your hands, and eventually in your child’s hands years from now.

Families often tell me they chose this work because it feels comfortable, natural, and unforced.

My sessions are relaxed and baby-led. There is no pressure for a spotless home, perfectly behaved toddlers, or carefully styled outfits. Everyone is welcome to show up exactly as they are.

I’ve been photographing families for more than twenty years and hold an MFA in photography and design. My experience allows me to move easily through a session, noticing the small moments parents might otherwise miss — the way your baby curls into your chest, the way siblings lean close, the way a new family begins to take shape.

The result is a set of photographs that feel honest, connected, and deeply personal.

Mel is amazing to work with.

During the shoot she made everything comfortable for me and the little man, which made the pictures come out natural and not forced.  We can’t wait to schedule more photo sessions with her!”

It’s completely okay if your baby has already arrived and you’re just getting around to thinking about newborn photography. Most families actually reach out after their baby is born so just reach out, its not too late!
